Yalari Indigenous Scholars:
To further your own understanding as a 'learner for life', speak with the girls in which you teach. They are happy to share, although shy at first, they are a great source of information. This is a wonderful opportunity to open the lines of communication between student and staff, gain a wonderful professional relationship and learn something new in which you may not have known before. This should be your first point of call. A simple relaxed chat in the corridor could shape something which inspires others and build friendships.

Suggested Readings:
Grenville, K 2005, The Secret River, Text Publishing, Australia.
- The Secret River explores the historical perspectives of early European settlement in Australia following William Thornhill who was transported from London to NSW for theft. The story investigates the struggles, fears and contemplations of both the Aboriginal people of the Darug nation and white settlers, questioning your own understanding and asking you to think 'How would I react?'. The Secret River gives a harsh reality check of Australia's history.
Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Report, 1997, Bringing Them Home, Canberra.
- A report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families
Pascoe, B with AIATIS, 2012, 3rd Edn, The Little Red Yellow Black Book, Aboriginal Studies Press, Canberra.
- The Little Red Yellow Black Book is an introductory resource to Indigenous life. It provides a snapshot of a variety of areas of Indigenous society including case studies on history, culture, sport, language, health and identity. Written in first person, the book gives a true account of real life Indigenous perspectives.
Saffioti, T, 2011, Stolen Girl, Magabala Books, Broome.
- Stolen girl is a fictional book recounting the age of the 'Stolen Generation' of Australia. The story follows a girl who was taken from her family by the government and placed in a girls home. Stolen Girl tracks the harsh reality of being in an environment with no love and a place where nothing is familiar. The loss of culture and identity is evident as the young girl struggles to conform to white instruction and way of life. The book captures the true depth of emotion in Australia's dark history.
Tan, S and Marsden, J, 2010, The Rabbits, Hachette Children's Books, Sydney.
- The Rabbits, a picture book, observes the issues of colonisation through the eyes of native animals. This vivid interpretation shows the initial curiosity, intrigue and bewilderment which quickly follows into fear as 'The Rabbits' keep on coming. The book will leave you questioning and challenge what is right and wrong.
